What Skin Treatments Should You Avoid Before a Sunny Holiday?
Booking a skin treatment before a holiday can seem like the perfect way to get your complexion looking its best before you travel. However, if your plans involve strong sunshine, sunbathing, swimming or spending long periods outdoors, some treatments need to be planned more carefully.
Treatments such as IPL Skin Rejuvenation, Laser Hair Removal, Chemical Peels and Microneedling all work differently, but sun exposure can be an important consideration for each of them. Recent tanning can affect whether certain light based treatments are suitable, while resurfacing and collagen stimulating treatments may require recovery time and careful sun protection afterwards.
This does not mean you need to stop having professional skin treatments throughout the summer. The important thing is choosing the right treatment at the right time and considering what you will actually be doing before and after your appointment.
At Eterno Clinic, we take upcoming holidays into account when recommending treatment. If you have a sunny trip planned, let us know during your consultation so we can advise whether your chosen treatment can go ahead or would be better scheduled for another time.
Why Does Sun Exposure Matter Around Skin Treatments?
Many professional skin treatments work by deliberately stimulating renewal within the skin. Depending on the procedure, this might involve exfoliating the surface, creating controlled micro-channels, delivering radio frequency energy or using light to target pigment.
Your skin then needs time to respond and recover. Significant UV exposure during this period can make protecting recently treated skin more difficult and, depending on the procedure, may increase the likelihood of irritation or unwanted pigmentation.
A sunny holiday also introduces more than UV exposure alone. Higher temperatures, increased sweating, chlorinated swimming pools, salt water and changes to your normal skincare routine can all affect recently treated skin. Even something as simple as spending considerably more time outdoors can make following your normal aftercare routine more difficult.
For this reason, treatment planning should consider your plans on both sides of your appointment rather than focusing only on whether a procedure can technically be performed during summer.
IPL Skin Rejuvenation Needs Careful Planning Around Sun Exposure
IPL Skin Rejuvenation is one of the treatments where recent tanning and upcoming sun exposure need particular consideration.
IPL uses controlled pulses of light to improve concerns such as pigmentation, freckles, sunspots and redness. Because the treatment interacts with pigment within the skin, changes in skin colour caused by tanning can affect treatment suitability.
If your skin has recently tanned, your appointment may need to be delayed. Similarly, if you are about to spend a significant amount of time sunbathing, having IPL immediately before travelling may not be appropriate because protecting the treated skin from UV exposure will be considerably more difficult.
For many people, IPL is easier to plan during periods when significant sun exposure can be avoided. If you are already undergoing a course of IPL, tell the Eterno Clinic team about upcoming holidays and recent tanning before arranging your next session.
Should You Have a Chemical Peel Before a Sunny Holiday?
Chemical Peels also need careful consideration around holidays, although it is important to recognise that not every peel has the same strength or recovery requirements.
Eterno Clinic offers different professional peel treatments, including Obagi Blue Peel Radiance and DermaQuest Chemical Peels. Depending on the treatment selected, Chemical Peels can help improve concerns including pigmentation, uneven skin tone, congestion, acne, fine lines, rough texture and dull-looking skin.
These treatments work by encouraging the removal of damaged surface cells and stimulating skin renewal. Appropriate aftercare and sun protection are therefore particularly important while the skin is recovering.
A superficial peel will not necessarily have the same considerations as a stronger resurfacing treatment, which is why there is little value in saying every Chemical Peel must be avoided throughout summer. Your skin condition, the treatment being performed, recent sun exposure and your holiday plans should all be considered when deciding on the best timing.
What About Skin Resurfacers?
Eterno Clinic also offers DermaQuest Skin Resurfacers. Although resurfacers and Chemical Peels are sometimes grouped together, they are not necessarily identical treatments.
Skin resurfacing treatments use exfoliating ingredients to remove dead skin cells and encourage skin renewal, helping to address concerns such as congestion, uneven texture, dullness and some signs of ageing.
Because exfoliation is involved, sun protection afterwards remains important. Booking a resurfacing treatment immediately before several days of strong UV exposure may not be the most sensible option, particularly if you are planning a beach or pool holiday.
The intensity of the treatment and your individual skin will influence how it should be scheduled, so let us know about your travel plans before booking.
What About Dermapen Microneedling Before a Holiday?
Dermapen Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-channels within the skin. This triggers the body’s natural repair response and encourages collagen and elastin production, helping to improve concerns such as fine lines, acne scarring, enlarged pores and uneven skin texture.
Unlike IPL, Microneedling does not use light to target pigment within the skin. However, your skin still needs appropriate care following treatment and temporary redness, warmth or sensitivity can occur.
Having Dermapen immediately before a holiday where you plan to spend most of your time in strong sunshine may therefore make recovery unnecessarily difficult. Swimming, heat, sweating and prolonged outdoor exposure should also be considered when deciding when to schedule your treatment.
This does not mean Microneedling has to stop throughout summer. The more important consideration is whether your plans allow you to protect your skin and follow your aftercare properly.
Should You Have RF Microneedling Before a Sunny Holiday?
Radio Frequency Microneedling combines fine needles with controlled radio frequency energy delivered into deeper layers of the skin. The treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production and can be particularly useful for concerns such as skin laxity, wrinkles, acne scarring, crepey skin and uneven texture.
As RF Microneedling is a more intensive collagen stimulating treatment than a simple maintenance facial, appropriate recovery and aftercare are important.
If your holiday involves prolonged sunshine, regular swimming and long periods outdoors, scheduling RF Microneedling immediately beforehand may make following your aftercare more challenging. This does not make RF Microneedling a treatment that must universally be avoided during summer, but its timing should be considered carefully around a sunny holiday.
What About PRP Microneedling?
PRP Microneedling combines microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma obtained from a small sample of your own blood. The treatment uses the controlled skin renewal associated with microneedling alongside growth factors found within PRP to support the skin’s natural repair processes.
Although PRP changes the way the treatment supports skin rejuvenation, the microneedling element still means your skin needs appropriate recovery and aftercare.
If you are considering PRP Microneedling before travelling, tell your skin specialist about your plans so the timing can be assessed properly rather than assuming that adding PRP removes the normal considerations associated with Microneedling.
Don’t Forget About Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal is another treatment where your holiday plans and recent tanning are particularly important.
The treatment works by using light energy to target pigment within the hair. As tanning increases pigment within the skin itself, changes in your skin colour can affect how safely laser treatment can be performed.
This becomes particularly relevant before a summer holiday because areas such as the legs, arms, face, chest, back and bikini area may receive considerably more sun exposure than usual.
If you have developed a tan or experienced significant sun exposure, always tell the Eterno Clinic team before attending your next appointment. It is better to adjust your treatment schedule than continue simply because you are partway through a course.
Why Timing Your Treatment Matters Before You Fly
Even when your skin is suitable for a particular treatment, having it immediately before travelling is not always the best approach.
Think realistically about what your first few days away will involve. You may be exposed to stronger UV levels than you are used to, spend considerably more time outside and swim regularly in chlorinated or salt water. Hot weather can also mean increased sweating, while flights and air conditioning can leave the skin feeling dehydrated.
Recently treated skin may already require gentle care. Allowing it sufficient time to settle before travelling can make following your aftercare instructions much easier and reduce the number of factors your skin has to deal with at once.
Can You Have a Skin Treatment Straight After Your Holiday?
Returning home does not automatically mean your normal treatment schedule can restart immediately. If you have developed a tan, experienced sunburn or spent significant amounts of time outdoors, your skin may need to be reassessed first.
After a sunny holiday, the skin can feel dehydrated, sensitive or irritated, while existing pigmentation may appear darker following increased UV exposure. If you have sunburn, soreness or peeling, allowing your skin to recover should take priority over immediately booking another treatment.
Recent tanning is particularly relevant if you are having IPL or Laser Hair Removal because changes in skin pigmentation can affect treatment suitability. Mention your recent sun exposure when arranging your first appointment after travelling so the appropriate advice can be given.
Does SPF 50 Mean You Can Have Any Treatment Before a Holiday?
Wearing a high factor broad-spectrum sunscreen is an essential part of protecting your skin, but SPF 50 does not mean every treatment is automatically suitable immediately before a sunny holiday.
No sunscreen provides complete protection from UV radiation, and how effectively it works depends on applying enough product and reapplying it appropriately. Swimming, sweating and towelling can all remove sunscreen from the skin, which is why regular reapplication is particularly important on holiday.
Sun protection should also involve sensible behaviour when UV levels are high, including seeking shade and using protective clothing where appropriate. SPF should support good treatment planning rather than be used as a substitute for treatment-specific aftercare.
What About Fake Tan?
Fake tan does not expose the skin to UV radiation, but it can still be relevant when planning certain light based treatments because it temporarily changes the colour of the skin’s surface.
If you use self-tanning products before travelling, let the Eterno Clinic team know before your appointment. This is particularly important when you are having treatments such as Laser Hair Removal.
It is always better to mention recent tanning products during your consultation rather than assume they will not affect your treatment.
What Happens If You Get Sunburnt Before Your Appointment?
If you become sunburnt before a scheduled skin treatment, contact the clinic before attending. Sunburn means the skin has been damaged by ultraviolet radiation and is experiencing an inflammatory response, even if the initial redness has begun to fade.
Recently sunburnt, sore or peeling skin may not be suitable for certain treatments, so your appointment may need to be postponed until the area has recovered.
The same principle applies after your holiday. If your skin has been sunburnt, allowing it to heal should come before booking treatments intended to address pigmentation, texture or other cosmetic concerns.
Are There Gentler Treatments to Consider Before a Holiday?
If your main goal is to help your complexion look refreshed before travelling, it may not be necessary to choose an intensive resurfacing or collagen stimulating treatment.
Depending on your skin and how soon you are travelling, a treatment focused more heavily on hydration and maintaining skin quality may sometimes be more appropriate. However, even gentler treatments should be chosen according to your skin and travel plans rather than assumed to be suitable immediately before every holiday.
SmartMeso Mesotherapy
SmartMeso Mesotherapy is a needle-free treatment available at Eterno Clinic that focuses on hydration and improving overall skin quality. It can be particularly useful for skin that feels dehydrated or looks dull and tired.
This can be relevant before a holiday because travelling itself can affect the skin. Flights, air conditioning, warmer weather and changes to your normal routine can all leave the complexion feeling dehydrated.
As SmartMeso does not involve the same type of resurfacing as a Chemical Peel or use light to target pigment in the way IPL does, it may be easier to incorporate into some pre-holiday treatment plans. Your skin condition, travel date and expected sun exposure should still be discussed before booking.
Eterno Extract & Glo’ Facial
The Eterno Extract & Glo’ Facial is another option that may be considered when the aim is to refresh the complexion rather than perform a more intensive corrective treatment.
The facial focuses on cleansing and extraction while incorporating LED Light Therapy to support the skin. It can be useful when your complexion feels congested or needs refreshing before an event or trip.
For someone who wants their skin to look cleaner, fresher and more radiant before travelling, this type of treatment may be more practical than scheduling an intensive peel or collagen stimulating procedure immediately before departure.
The right option will still depend on your skin, how soon you are travelling and what you plan to do while you are away.
Which Treatments Need the Most Consideration Before a Sunny Holiday?
Rather than dividing treatments into those that are completely safe and those that are completely unsuitable during summer, it is more accurate to consider how the individual treatment interacts with sun exposure and what the recovery process involves.
IPL Skin Rejuvenation and Laser Hair Removal require particular attention around tanning because both rely on light based technology and changes in skin pigmentation can affect treatment suitability.
Chemical Peels and Skin Resurfacers need careful planning because they encourage exfoliation and skin renewal. The level of caution required will depend partly on the strength and type of treatment.
Dermapen Microneedling, RF Microneedling and PRP Microneedling do not work in the same way as IPL, but they still stimulate controlled skin renewal and require appropriate recovery and aftercare.
Treatments focused primarily on hydration or lighter maintenance may sometimes be easier to incorporate into pre-holiday plans, but suitability should still be assessed individually.
How to Plan Your Skin Treatments Around a Holiday
A useful way to decide whether the timing is right is to think about your skin both before and after your appointment.
Consider how much sun exposure you have had recently and whether your skin has tanned or become sunburnt. You should then think realistically about the holiday itself. A city break where you spend much of the day indoors is very different from seven days spent beside a swimming pool or on the beach.
Finally, consider whether you will genuinely be able to follow your aftercare. If your plans involve daily swimming, prolonged sunshine, high temperatures and limited opportunity to protect the treated area, scheduling a more intensive treatment for another time may make more sense.
What Should You Do If Your Holiday Is Already Booked?
If your holiday is already in the diary, tell us your travel dates when arranging your treatment. Depending on your skin, recent sun exposure and the procedure you are considering, we may recommend proceeding as planned, choosing a gentler option, allowing more recovery time before departure or waiting until after your holiday.
If you return with a tan, certain treatments may also need to be postponed until your skin is suitable again.
Delaying an appointment should not be viewed as a setback. Good skin treatment is about choosing the right procedure at the right time rather than trying to fit as many treatments as possible into your calendar.
