Don't forget the sunscreen!

Updated: Feb 16, 2019

Sun protection is one of the forgotten parts of our skin care routine. We do so well picking the right cleansers, toners and masks, but all that hard work will be quickly erased if we forget the vital step of protection!

UVA & UVB rays are damaging to the skin and are present even when the sun isn’t shining, breaking their way through the thickest of clouds. We all know what happens as we age… yes, the skin wrinkles, it happens, we can’t change it. BUT, excessive sun exposure can accelerate this process tenfold, so reach for that sunscreen even on the gloomiest of days! Sunscreens are split into two categories – Physical and Chemical:

Physical Sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin. They are often referred to as physical blockers.

Advantages of physical sunscreens versus chemical sunscreens:

  • Offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays and are naturally broad spectrum

  • Protect from the sun as soon as they're applied, no wait needed

  • Last longer when in direct UV light

  • Less likely to cause a stinging irritation on the skin, making them better for sensitive skin

  • Better for those with heat-activated skin (like those with rosacea and redness) since they deflect the heat and energy given off by the sun away from the skin

  • Less likely to be pore-clogging, making them ideal for blemish-prone skin types

  • Longer shelf life

Chemical Sunscreens contain organic (carbon-based) compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, releasing that heat from the skin. They are often referred to as chemical or organic absorbers.

Advantages of chemical sunscreens versus physical sunscreens:

  • Tend to be thinner and therefore spread more easily on the skin, making them more wearable for daily use

  • Less product is needed to provide full skin coverage

  • Formula is easier to add additional treatment ingredients to, such as peptides and enzymes, which offer other skin benefits
